Supporting a sustainable and equitable future for all.

LDDI’s Climate Justice and Sustainability Initiative aims to enhance awareness of and engagement with principles of sustainability in education to address multi-dimensional environmental challenges. Our aim is to develop skills and capacities to create and share resources and professional development opportunities to inspire impactful change in learning and course design.

A monthly campaign to ignite climate justice action.

Our monthly campaign is designed to deepen our understanding of climate justice and engage in meaningful and collective action to lessen the causes and impacts of climate change.

May 2024: Fly Less

Why? Air travel contributes significantly to GHG emissions and is the fastest growing cause of climate change (Econation, 2024). During conference season, it is crucial to understand the environmental footprint of travel and consider that most students and staff do not fly at all.

To compare UBC’s annual per capita GHG emissions to a range of flights, Maxi Kniewasser from the Sustainability & Engineering unit at UBC created the graph above. Of note, a single round-trip flight from Vancouver to Paris emits as much CO2e as 8.5 years’ worth of UBC’s average per capita emissions.

How? To reduce UBCs institutional carbon density one solution is to convert conferences into virtual or hybrid experiences using tools such as Zoom/ MS teams / Google to enable academics to share their research sans jet-setting. You can learn more about online conference tools by watching, Hybrid classrooms and meetings and Zoom facilitation masterclass or visit, Live Event Recording & Webcasting for more tips and strategies.
