LDDI’s Climate Justice and Sustainability Initiative aims to enhance awareness of and engagement with principles of sustainability in education to address multi-dimensional environmental challenges. Our aim is to develop skills and capacities to create and share resources and professional development opportunities to inspire impactful change in learning and course design.

Our monthly campaign is designed to deepen our understanding of climate justice and engage in meaningful and collective action to lessen the causes and impacts of climate change.


July 2024: Fight Food Waste

Why? Food waste contributes to 10% of greenhouse gas emissions, surpassing the entire aviation industry. Annually, 2.5 billion Tonnes of food are wasted, while 828 million people face hunger every day. The economic impact of food waste amounts to a staggering $1.2 trillion each year. It’s essential that we address food waste to reduce its environmental impact and ensure better food security for everyone.
How? Too Good To Go is an app that, “lets you rescue unsold food at your favourite spots from an untimely fate. Explore local cafés and restaurants in your area and save surplus food from going to waste at a reasonable price.

Beyond the Frame: Floating Schools in Bangladesh

July 15 – September 15 | Neville Scarfe Lobby & Ponderosa Commons Lobby

Beyond the Frame is a photo and video exhibition which offers a critical perspective on the Climate and Nature Emergency, inviting us to look beyond mainstream climate discourse. In Bangladesh, the education system faces ongoing challenges due to climate impacts like cyclones and floods. Against the backdrop of these challenges, many children and adult learners attend schools in boats: Floating Schools. This exhibition highlights Bangladesh’s Floating Schools as a powerful response to educational needs in the face of the climate crisis.

Mahfida Tahniat, the exhibition’s creator, will be available to answer questions at the exhibition locations on the following Tuesdays: July 30, August 6, August 20, September 3 and September 10. On those dates, Mahfida will be at the Neville Scarfe Lobby location from 11 am to 12 pm and at the Ponderosa Commons Lobby location from 12 pm to 1 pm.

Indigenous Art & Sustainability: Hands-on Beaded Earring Workshop

Tuesday, May 28 | 12pm – 2:00pm

The intention behind this hands-on workshop is to repurpose salmon vertebrae into beads in a unique and authentic way to gain a greater awareness of Indigenous people’s connections. Presenter Cheyenne Cunningham began this work in 2022 as part of a composting pedagogies project for an environmental literacy class.

In this interactive Viewpoint session, Stories Rooted in Healing the Planet, our panelists Dr. Elin Kelsey, Dr. Sara Florence Davidson and Dr. Bonny Norton with Dr. Liam Dohorty share their unique perspectives and approaches to children’s books that weave in themes of climate justice, the environment, animals, and more.
