LDDI’s Climate Justice and Sustainability Initiative aimed to enhance awareness of and engagement with principles of sustainability in education to address multi-dimensional environmental challenges. Our goal was to develop skills and capacities to create and share resources and professional development opportunities to inspire impactful change in learning and course design.

Beyond the Frame: Floating Schools in Bangladesh

July 15 – September 15, 2024 | Neville Scarfe Lobby & Ponderosa Commons Lobby

Beyond the Frame was a photo and video exhibition which offered a critical perspective on the Climate and Nature Emergency, inviting us to look beyond mainstream climate discourse. In Bangladesh, the education system faces ongoing challenges due to climate impacts like cyclones and floods. Against the backdrop of these challenges, many children and adult learners attend schools in boats: Floating Schools. This exhibition highlighted Bangladesh’s Floating Schools as a powerful response to educational needs in the face of the climate crisis.

Mahfida Tahniat, the exhibition’s creator, was available to answer questions at the exhibition locations on July 30, August 6, August 20, September 3 and September 10.

 

An Inter-Institutional Action on Climate Change: Voices for Environmental Change in Policy and Economics

Indigenous Art & Sustainability: Hands-on Beaded Earring Workshop

The intention behind this hands-on workshop was to repurpose salmon vertebrae into beads in a unique and authentic way to gain a greater awareness of Indigenous people’s connections. Presenter Cheyenne Cunningham began this work in 2022 as part of a composting pedagogies project for an environmental literacy class.

LDDI’s workshop, From Print to Pixels, identified wasteful paper-based practices and taught participants how to adopt digital solutions to reduce their environmental impact and improve efficiency. LDDI showcased how digitization could support us to work, read, annotate, share, collaborate and present sustainably.

The Intersection of Climate Justice and Digital Innovation: Raising Awareness of Technologies Environmental Footprint

Panelists Dr. Keri Ewart, Dr. Sandra Scott, Dr. Derek Gladwin and Dr. Kshamta Hunter spoke about the intersections and implications of climate justice and digital innovation. They shared their research and perspectives on the nexus between technology and the environment and discussed strategies and limitations across these intersections.

 

Stories Rooted in Healing the Planet

In this interactive Viewpoint session, Stories Rooted in Healing the Planet, panelists Dr. Elin Kelsey, Dr. Sara Florence Davidson and Dr. Bonny Norton with Dr. Liam Dohorty shared their unique perspectives and approaches to children’s books that weave in themes of climate justice, the environment, animals and more.
