Viewpoints

Exploring unique topics

Viewpoints is a new series of events that will allow faculty, students, others to join members of LDDI in exploring a range of pedagogical issues relating to teaching and learning with technology. New events with unique topics will take place about once per month, and each will include a panel of at least one faculty member, one student, and one LDDI Learning Designer. Each session will be followed by a blog post capturing salient ideas shared among panelists and participants. A comment section is available to encourage continued discussion among participants and the wider community.

Purpose

The purpose of these sessions is to invite the academic community (faculty, staff, students) to participate in civil discourse on current topics that involve teaching and learning with technology. This is an opportunity to engage in collaborative argumentation in which the group of attendees explore and critique different ideas about the topic to build a deeper understanding. To encourage everyone to be a part of this collaboration, please:

  • Be respectful
  • Don’t make it personal
  • Think critically and reflectively about the ideas presented and build on them

Bring your viewpoints to these interactive sessions! We encourage members of the UBC community to attend and actively take part in the discussions, or else come simply as a silent spectator and watch the conversation unfold.

Respectful Debate

Respectful Environment: The Faculty of Education and UBC seek to foster an environment in which respect, civility, diversity, opportunity and inclusion are valued. We ask that all participants adhere to the principles outlined in the UBC Respectful Environment Statement and UBC’s Resources for Respectful Debate.

Past Sessions

This space, curated by LDDI Learning Designers, features current and emerging strategies and resources that support the shifting teaching and learning landscape. Each highlight includes the context for the integration of a particular technology with demonstration and a brief discussion of its pedagogical pros and cons. The design solutions are the result of a partnership between a learning designer and a course author or instructor, but it often includes a collaboration of professionals with diverse skills; educational technologists, media experts, web designers and others.
